Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – June 14, 2024 – As we approach the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA) Meteorology Department is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors.

Dr. Holly Hamilton, TCIAA’s Director of Meteorology, emphasizes the importance of preparedness as predictions indicate an exceptionally active hurricane season. “Our team is fully prepared to deliver essential local weather information, empowering the community to make informed preparations for any severe weather conditions,” said Dr. Hamilton.

Dr. Hamilton highlighted that forecasts from various agencies predict this year could be one of the most intense on record. “Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center predict an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year, with 17 to 25 total named storms, significantly higher than the average of 14 named storms per season. Of these, 8 to 13 are expected to become hurricanes, including 4 to 7 major hurricanes.”

To help the community prepare, Dr. Hamilton shared key hurricane preparedness tips:

  1. Create a Comprehensive Hurricane Plan: Residents and businesses should secure their properties, prepare an emergency kit, and stay informed through reliable local sources.
  2. Download the DDME Alert App: This app provides timely local updates to help residents stay informed.
  3. Stock Non-Perishable Food and Water: Ensure a supply that lasts at least three days to sustain your family during an emergency.
  4. Visit the TCIAA Website: Download the Emergency Kit Checklist for a detailed list of essential items.

Dr. Hamilton reiterated that preparation is key to minimizing the impact of hurricanes. “Following these steps will help safeguard your family and property. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe.”
