#TurksandCaicos, June 18, 2024 – The accused DAVID MARTIN was before her Ladyship, the Hon Chief Justice, Mrs. Mable Agyemang, for a sufficiency hearing on Friday  June 10th for his alleged attack on a female American tourist.

His matter went unchallenged by his senior defense counsel, Mrs. Lara Maroof Misick, and her Ladyship committed him to trial.  He is charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, an offense that carries a maximum imprisonment for life, if convicted.

Martin remains on bail, and his Plea and Directions Hearing (PDH) is for later this month on June 28.  Police confirmed that MARTIN admitted to the attack but says he was under “a demonic attack/influence.”

The Taxi Drivers’ Association issued several press releases, with the aim to clarify that MARTIN is not a government licensed taxi driver, instead he is an illegal jitney driver, which is unregulated and operates outside the law.

Also, appearing for an alleged night time attack of a female employee of the Alexandra Resort, was illegal jitney driver ELVETHAN HANDFIELD.

His matter was adjourned to the next sufficiency hearing proceeding in July; his attorney Ashwood Forbes had only recently received his case bundle and was not yet prepared to proceed at the Sufficiency Hearing.

Handfield is remanded at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR).
