#Kingston, April 1, 2024 – Member of Parliament (MP) for St. Catherine South East Robert Miller, is encouraging the responsible use of the internet by individuals.

Mr. Miller noted that with increased access to the internet, and as the Universal Service Fund (USF) continues to roll-out free Wi-Fi across the country, persons should exercise care when posting information online.

“There are certain Acts in place to deal with that, and you can get into trouble for that, so we are asking you the students, and the residents of this community, that you deal with the information in a responsible manner,” he said.

“Be responsible in the information that you will gather from the services and take care of the system. We ask the parents to monitor the students at the Wi-Fi services, and assist them as best as possible, to do their School Based Assessments, and to do their schoolwork,” he added.

Mr. Miller was speaking at the recent launch of a free Wi-Fi Hotspot facility, in Waterford, St. Catherine.

Under the Cybercrimes Act, it is an offence for people to use a computer to publish data about another individual with the intention to harass or cause harm.

To date, the USF has established free Wi-Fi services across the constituency, in Penn Way, Myrtle Way, Portmore Gardens, and at the Portmore Mall.

The USF is an agency of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunication and Transport, and was established in 2005, with a mandate of bridging the digital divide, through the provision of Internet access to everyone.

It has been instrumental in the execution of projects such as the Community Wi-Fi programme, for which there are scores of sites located in communities islandwide.
