#TurksAndCaicos, January 9, 2023 – Mabel Agyemang, TCI Chief Justice, is calling on the government to comply with the constitution by providing adequate funding for the judiciary.

“We implore the Legislature and Cabinet to not deny us the funds we require to operate effectively and to expand access to justice. At this time, due to budget cuts and denial of needed funds for our work and programs, we are barely doing so, and new much-needed initiatives to increase efficiency have stalled.”

She made the call during the Legal Year Opening ceremony on January 4, stressing that she was not criticizing any institution but lobbying for better funding and resources, including a purpose-built court in Providenciales.  The CJ insists this would result in better administration of justice. At the Legal Year opening were Her Excellency the Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam and Hon. Minister for Tourism, Hon. Josephine Connolly, who make up part of the Cabinet.
