#UnitedKingdom, December 10, 2023 – After repeatedly going back on its climate promises, the United Kingdom is unlikely to reach its climate goals by 2030, missing them by a significant margin according to a new report from the Guardian.
The analysis sourced from Friends of the Earth found that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s tenure has widened the gap. Sunak has had a rocky relationship with climate action since his appointment in 2023.
“While Britain has long been a leader in cutting emissions, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is now implementing a stunning reversal of climate-friendly policies,” says a Yale analysis of his tenure.
Prime Minister Sunak has allowed oil and gas companies to move forward with mining in the North Sea, slowed expansions of railways which were touted to cut emissions from cars, and extended the current term limits on gas-powered vehicles.
Despite this when the World Leader and former Banker spoke during the COP 28 Climate Summit this week he said,
“The world is just not moving fast enough. Climate science shows that we’re off track and climate politics is close to breaking point.”
The report from The Guardian says, without immediate change, the global superpower will only reach just over half of the goals it committed under the Paris Agreement.
