#TurksandCaicos, December 21, 2021 – We stand together in our efforts to ensure the safety of the islands, its residents and visitors.

The safety and security of our islands is a matter of concern across our communities. Following the recent fatal and gun-related incidents, there understandably, is a heightened fear and particular concern for the safety of our youth. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and friends who have lost loved ones.

Ensuring our national security is our paramount concern. As we approach the festive period, the National Security Council has agreed to the implementation of multi-agency security operations, designed to prevent crime, specifically those using firearms, to safeguard our communities and bring offenders to justice.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) will adopt a full-force approach with operational security plans that cover the full festive period, including special event days such as Maskanoo and New Year’s Eve.

The TCI Regiment and Border Force will be working alongside the police force to fortify our operational response efforts. They will take on a pivotal role in monitoring all ports of entry, and inland Regiment patrols will be deployed to key areas over the next two weeks.

We also remain steadfast in upholding the integrity of our borders and will be intensifying our efforts in both coastal and maritime patrols. Our maritime patrols will actively engage in deterring illegal immigration activities, particularly in areas where sloops may attempt unauthorised landings.

We want to make it clear, unequivocally that the safety of our citizens is our utmost priority. These measures are not only necessary but are rooted in our firm responsibility to create a secure environment for every resident and visitor in our islands.

As you will appreciate, some of these activities may cause temporary interruptions, and we appeal to the public for your understanding and patience as we work towards a safer community.

Over this festive period, we also ask you to stay alert to road safety, avoid distractions, wear seatbelts and plan your travel arrangements so as not to drink and drive.

The strength of the Turks and Caicos Islands lies within its community. Maintaining safer communities demands continuous and committed collaboration from all of us. By engaging actively and sharing information, we reduce the opportunities for those seeking to engage in criminal activities.

If you suspect someone – a family member, friend, or colleague – is vulnerable to involvement in such activities or possesses a dangerous weapon, it’s crucial to speak out. Seek support from someone you trust or use the confidential channels available through the police website. Your vigilance is instrumental in safeguarding our community.

In closing, let us unite as a community during this festive season. Together, we can create a secure, safe and joyful environment for all.

Thank you, we wish you a safe and blessed Christmas.
