#Jamaica, December 20, 2023 – In Jamaica, Mikey Bennett’s words perfectly encapsulate the vibrant essence of the holiday season. December ushers in a unique kind of festivity, amplifying the already rich cultural tapestry of the country. The joy radiates in every corner during this special season.
One of the standout events that make Christmas in Jamaica truly unforgettable is the Grand Market, also known as “Gran’ Market.” Held on Christmas Eve in major towns across the island, it’s a lively and colorful affair that spans the entire day.
Gran’ Market is as the day suggests – market- but bigger. And since it’s Christmas, the streets are normally well lit and decorated. Music is always bustling and people are all around for different occasions.
Some adults normally use this time to do last-minute shopping as other adults (vendors) would set up their stalls to make some extra cash – whether in store or on the roadside. Food items, clothes, home decor and toys would be some of the things being sold and bought.
While this event is not ideal for children due to the crowds and fast paced environment, it’s normally held with them in mind. As such, children would tag along, eyes gleaming with the anticipation of treats and fun activities lining the streets. Fun days and parties would normally be held for them in the mornings to the afternoon. There are some places where you might even find people dressed as Santa Claus to take pictures with dotting youngsters as they offer gift-wrapped toys.
Teenagers and some adults seize the festive spirit to meet friends, dance and immerse themselves in the joyous atmosphere.
Gran’ Market, deeply rooted in history and tradition, brings together communities, echoing the spirit of the season that has been cherished for generations. As Jamaicans look forward to this day-and-night extravaganza, it’s a time not just for shopping but for creating cherished memories and embracing the true essence of Christmas in Jamaica.
