#TurksandCaicos, December 5, 2023 – One man, one night and two cases against him linked to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. It led to the suspect being sent back to prison, on remand on Tuesday, November 28th, 2023 despite being granted bail earlier this year.
Police pursued a vehicle on June 15th with four men inside, during a stop and search, they report finding a firearm with four bullets within that car. Two of the four men were released on Police bail pending further investigation. One man was charged with immigration offenses and sent to Grand Turk prison. The double-accused, DARIO SANDS (COX), aka the fourth person in the vehicle was charged immediately because a further search by police turned up additional ammunition at his home.
Sands (Cox) was charged on the unregistered firearm found in the car.
The gun had to be sent overseas for DNA testing before any of the four who were riding in the vehicle on June 15 could be charged. Evidence in the case, as presented, revealed that DARIO SANDS (Cox) was a match with DNA found on the illegal firearm, while on bail, he was then re-arrested, charged and sent back to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) in Grand Turk, now on remand for the gun and ammunition found in the vehicle.
No firearm or ammunition charges were laid against the other three.
The Sufficiency Hearing on the ammunition found in the residence came up for court proceedings on a couple of occasions (in October and November) but did not proceed as we now know, the Prosecution was building a bigger case against the suspect by joining the ammunition charge to the car firearm charge. Both matters are now due for January 2024 hearings.
Dario Sands (Cox) is represented by F-Chambers law firm. For the Crown is Sophia Sandy-Smith.
