#TurksandCaicos, December 5, 2023 – A new Joint Declaration has been signed between the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories that will govern a new era of relations between the countries and Washington Misick, TCI Premier has revealed to residents what it entails.

Misick explained the six overarching themes that the document addressed during a November 23 meeting of the House of Assembly.

“The declaration was agreed by all OTs and focuses on 6 key themes. They are Stronger Global Family, Empowering Territory Governments, Mutual Expectations and Responsibilities, Sustainable Development,  Excellence in Public Service, Implementation and Oversight.”

Under the Joint Declaration individual contracts will also be signed with the UK and each OT.

It comes as Overseas Territories advocate for more control of their internal and external affairs much of which is regulated by the British. While remaining vague on the exact contents of the document Misick spoke along these lines during his address.

“This Declaration emphasizes the need for a modern partnership with the UK and among OTs. It sets out the collectively agreed-upon positions which underpin the relationship between the UK and the Overseas Territories and establishes the broad outlines and principles of a future-facing framework to govern the relationship between the UK and the OTs.”

The Turks and Caicos is currently going through a constitutional refresh with the UK as well with changes to the country’s political landscape already confirmed.
