#TurksandCaicos, December 21, 2023 – It went from a search and rescue to a search and recovery; anguishing news for another Turks and Caicos family when the confirmation came on Monday afternoon that the body of Roshawn Cox, a jet ski operator was found floating near the Tiki bar.
Cox, who went missing at sea on Sunday, December 17, residents are now clamoring for answers in how he died.
Reports that the body had been retrieved began coming into the Magnetic Media newsroom around 2 p.m. Monday. In the hours leading up to the confirmation, rough weather had seriously hampered rescue efforts for the missing man.
Up to 10 a.m., nationwide appeals for experienced boaters had still been going out, as family and friends hoped to rally support in the search for their loved one.
“We had a few boats out searching but the weather wasn’t in our favor. We will resume shortly once the weather breaks. [it was] just raining a lot.” One boater told us around 11. The bad weather had been affecting the Turks and Caicos all weekend.
It meant that no small craft, especially jet skis, should have been on the water.
The circumstances surrounding Cox’s death are unclear but reports indicate a jet ski was involved and that he may have been intending to rescue others in difficulty. Late Sunday the craft was found riderless, the man declared missing and a search immediately ensued.
As his loved ones grieve, unanswered questions remain, what company allowed the jet ski to be utilized despite repeated marine warnings, was the young man wearing a life jacket?
Our news team received a video of the young man on a jet ski, similar to the bright tangerine colored one that was found Sunday afternoon. While it’s unclear when this video was shot the young man was not wearing a life vest and appeared to be in great spirits.
FortisTCI issued a note of deepest condolences, a tribute to Roshawn Cox, an ICT Technologist with the company, calling him a “highly valued member of the FortisTCI team…he displayed a maturity beyond his years signaling to everyone the very special high-performing employee he was destined to become.”
