#TurksandCaicos, October 23, 2023 – Premier Washington Misick is reassuring residents that TCIG is considering several avenues to make housing affordable for residents after being informed that some people were worried about affording homes under the new housing policy.
“I’m not suggesting that the government is going to give away tens of millions of dollars, what I’m suggesting is that we need a system in place that would make financing and funding easier for a certain category of people at a certain income level to be able to afford a decent and comfortable place to live,” Misick said.
He stressed that the government was working to make this a reality
“TCI may actually have to find a way to put a mortgage fund in place for those persons who may not qualify at a commercial bank or a system that would have some kind of partial mortgage guarantee to get them on the housing ladder. These are all discussions that are taking place.”
He maintained that none of the upcoming housing options had been priced publicly as yet but different residents would gravitate to different options based on their budget, whether that was middle class on the poverty line for whatever reason.
He also warned those who could afford it not to be selfish and block those who truly need assistance.
“The people who are most able are always those at the front of the line unfortunately and so the people who are less able, or less well off sometimes find themselves at the back of the line.”
He appealed to residents to have a “brothers keeper” attitude allowing the vulnerable to access the help they need. The Premier was speaking on Expressions with Robert Hall on RTC FM on October 6th.
