The bodies of six newborns were discovered discarded at the entrance of a cemetery in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Resident Angel Cuesta, who lives near the cemetery, saw the body of one of the infants and called the authorities. The others, Cuesta said, as reported by The U.S. Sun, were found when the National Police arrived on the scene.

It’s disturbing to report that five of the bodies were in a plastic bag and one uncovered, Fausto Ortiz, security chief for the mayor’s office of Santo Domingo Este says.

Dr Angi Vicioso, medical examiner, who was present at the scene, said the bodies were of four girls and two boys and there were no signs of violence. Also, hospital tags were found around the feet and wrists of the bodies. Vicioso highlighted that they were all born on different dates, some stillborn and the others passed just hours after birth.

The identity cards at the scene were traced back to the neonatal unit of Juan Bosch City Hospital, which is located near the cemetery, authorities say.

Responding to the incident, Marilelda Reyes, Director of the hospital said the bodies of six newborns were delivered Tuesday to Funeral Home La Popular for proper burial. But, it has not been confirmed by the authorities if those bodies are the same as the ones found.

Calls were made to the funeral home and a man who identified himself only as Misael and refused to identify the owner of the company. Without commenting any further on the incident, there was confirmation that an investigation was underway to determine whether what occurred was the responsibility of the funeral home or
of the caretakers at the cemetery, the Observer reports.
