#TurksandCaicos, September 29, 2023 – The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force on September 28 participated in an anti-crime and peace initiative hosted by Ms. Sharla Walkin of Healing Haven and Conscience Connections TCI and the TCI National Trust.

Held at the Cheshire Hall Plantation Grounds, Providenciales, the initiative was geared towards sensitizing Grade Six pupils on the detrimental effects of crime, more so firearm-related crimes within the TCI and available alternatives.

Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting, Head of Crime, Safeguarding, and Public Protection Superintendent Dean Holden, and Assistant Superintendent of Police (Divisions) Calvin Chase, planted miniature trees alongside students of the Shining Stars Preparatory School, Oseta Jolly Primary School, and Ianthe Pratt Primary School.

Commissioner Botting in delivering remarks applauded the work of Ms. Walkin and her team and at the same time thanked them for partnering with the RTCIPF. Such engagement the Commissioner said allowed students the opportunity to hear a first-hand perspective on the effects of crime and its lifelong emotional damage to the loved ones left behind.

“These initiatives, are crucial to reduce gun crime in our communities and the RTCIPF Community Policing team has launched several initiatives aimed at steering our young people on the right path. I wish to thank Ms. Walkin for engaging with the RTCIPF and for her contribution and determination to raise awareness of the impacts of gun crime on families and communities. I salute your fortitude .. I also wish to thank my officers and staff for the work they undertake daily to protect their communities and given.”

Commissioner Botting added, “Tomorrow, the Turks and Caicos Islands celebrate National Youth Day, a celebration of the young people of the TCI who are the future of these Islands. The symbolism of tree planting reminds us that life brings new hope and a chance for change.

The Turks and Caicos Islands have lost too many lives to gun crime and this, along with programs that give the youths opportunities to be part of positive groups will bring the change and peace our communities need for a safe and secure future.”

Also in attendance was the Executive Director of the Turks and Caicos National Trust Winema Sanders-Penn.
