#TurksandCaicos, September 26, 2023 – A robbery chase ended in the shooting injury of two suspected car thieves early Thursday morning, now, another jurisdiction could be brought in for an internal investigation to determine if the discharge of firearms, which resulted in injury, was justified.

The Police, in a swift update on Thursday, say residents called in to report the theft of a flatbed truck from Five Cays. Using the country’s CCTV cameras, operators within the Police Control Room tracked the truck, and an armed team moved to intercept it.

Shots were fired by the police during the operation but the update did not say why.  Images of the allegedly stolen truck showed it was riddled with bullets.

No mention was made of any firearm on the side of the perpetrators, but police indicated that two of their vehicles were reportedly rammed by the truck, and two officers received injuries.  Both suspects were taken for medical care, and one has already been released into police custody.

Trevor Botting, Commissioner of Police, has assured residents that ‘the discharge of the firearms by Police Officers is under review with consideration to another Police Force from the Region leading an independent review of the circumstances.

He stressed that the investigation was ‘normal practice in such circumstances.’
