September 26, 2023 – Following a strained meeting of the CARICOM-appointed eminent persons group in Haiti in September, Guyana is calling for a transitional government for the country.

“It is lamentable that Dr. Henry’s administration has not been able to form such an encompassing transitional government representing a broad-based consensus — Without a transitional government, which enjoys the endorsement of the majority, effective governance and decision-making remain untenable,” CMC News quoted Irfaan Ali, Guyanese President, as saying during the Protocolary Meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Ali’s call comes as Henry’s end-of-2023 deadline to form a coalition government of sorts swiftly approaches with little progress in sight.  In fact, the September 4th trip, set up to discuss the new government with the EPG found that stakeholders had regressed in their willingness to form a joint solution.

Haiti continues to suffer from gang wars and political instability resulting in extreme hunger, record unemployment and extreme violence against the vulnerable all of which have fueled mass emigration.
