#TurksandCaicos, September 19, 2023 – A good portion of the 2023 Speech from the Throne was dedicated to the government’s position on crime in the first official correspondence on the matter from Washington Misick, TCI Premier, after weeks of residents hounding him for a comment.

“For a year and a half, we have seen spikes and dips in criminal activity, particularly in some parts of Providenciales. My government will not allow criminals to destroy the society we are creating. Everyone should feel safe, secure, and have full access to justice,” read Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam as she delivered the speech on behalf of the Premier (as is protocol).

The Governor cited millions spent on new technology and improving the justice system and police force, ‘historic’ legislation, increased frontline officers, more CCTV cameras, the new anti-gang unit, investment in cyber forensic systems, and more, as evidence of the government’s commitment.

The public was also updated on additional incoming resources.

“The UK has committed to fund additional air surveillance assets to support our efforts to enable full [surveillance] across all our islands,” she said

“Violence has shaken too many communities and destroyed too many families. Too many decent law-abiding citizens are living in fear, my government is working to defeat those who continue to disrupt the peace and safety of our community,” the Governor insisted.

The Speech, delivered on September 14, came from the desk of Premier Washington Misick and was delivered at the opening of Parliament.
