Environmental Health Department Celebrates Successful Conclusion of Virtual Water/Wastewater Plant Operators Course

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Thursday, 7th September 2023: The Environmental Health Department is pleased to announce the successful completion of a Virtual Water/Wastewater Plant Operators Course, that led to the certification of four (4) environmental health officers and two (2) heads of department. The course was held in collaboration with the prestigious University of Technology, Jamaica. This intensive course took place from 29th May to 25th August 2023.

Six (6) participants actively engaged in the course to enhance their expertise in crucial areas of water and wastewater management, which covered a diverse range of topics, including:

  • Water, Wastewater, and Sludge Systems,
  • Water Microbiology,
  • Plant Health and Safety,
  • Reuse and Biosolids,
  • Plant Preventative Maintenance,
  • Wastewater Public Health and Environment,
  • Treatment Plant Seminars (Field Trips).

As regulators, our responsibility is to oversee and ensure the proper implementation of wastewater management systems. This initiative is an integral part of the ongoing efforts by the Environmental Health Department to enhance disease prevention and strengthen surveillance, contributing to a healthier community.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants were awarded certifications recognised by the University of Technology Jamaica validating their proficiency as Water/Wastewater Plant Operators.

Remarking on this achievement, the Hon. Minister of Health and Human Services, Shaun D Malcolm, stated: “The Ministry of Health commends the participants for their hard work and the University of Technology Jamaica for its valuable collaboration in this endeavour. This course signifies a crucial step towards ensuring the sustainable management of water resources, public health protection, and environmental preservation in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
