#TheBahamas, September 15, 2023 – Dengue has unfortunately claimed the life of a nine year old child, as the country battles an outbreak of the disease.  This is reported by Bahamas health authorities.

Dr. Pearl McMillan, chief medical officer, spoke on the death of the child. She informed that he “presented with a viral type illness but did not continue with the care that was provided and, unfortunately, he succumbed to the illness.”

She also said that they received the results which confirmed that he was infected with dengue.

Now, The Bahamas needs to clamp down further on measures to fight the disease as cases are on the rise according to Dr. Michael Darville, Health and Wellness Minister, who informed that there are 88 cases up from 70 last week, the majority in New Providence, he said.

He further informed that Berry Islands and Exuma reported one case each, which he said are imported from New Providence.

Also, Grand Bahama has six cases confirmed.

Vaughn Miller, Environment Minister, said his ministry is engaged in vector control and Dr. Darville said a vector control team will travel to Exuma.
