#TurksandCaicos, September 15, 2023 – The period allotted for public consultation on the proposed changes to the Health Professions Ordinance has officially come to a close; the Health Professions Authority had reached out to the public via email in late July to get their opinions on the changes which include the establishment of compliance officers for the health sector.

The changes are touted by TCIG as intended to ‘streamline the application process for licensing and registration of health professionals within the Turks and Caicos Islands and improve compliance.’

Included in the proposed amendment are the following:

  • The setup of compliance officers and their powers;
  • Provisions to allow temporary traveling; doctors to register as providers locally;
  • A new requirement for health professionals to be insured at all their places of operation;
  • Outline of actions qualifying as misconduct;
  • A requirement for employers to report any misconduct and more.

The ordinance governs all health workers in the Turks and Caicos, how they are licensed and any disciplinary action to be taken against them by the Health Professions Authority.

Big ticket items included in the rework are a complete revocation and revision of Part VIII, the Disciplinary Procedures, and the introduction of said compliance officers to monitor and investigate health professionals.

The consultation period ended on August 21st and Magnetic Media has reached out to TCIG and representatives in the medical field to find out how the proposed amendments, which will likely be written into law, are being received and how they will affect residents.
