August 17, 2023 – A major cancer-fighting event is coming up this weekend, to be aired simultaneously across more than 50 media platforms in North America including all four major broadcast networks in the US.
The Stand Up To Cancer Special (SU2C) is an entertainment event that sees comedians, journalists, singers, and other stars join forces to put on a televised ‘roadblock’ special to benefit the charity.
Included in this year’s charity event are stars like Actor Don Cheadle, Black Panther Star Danai Gurira, Actor/Comedian Ken Jeong, Singer Justin Timberlake, and more.
It is the eighth such special since the start of SU2C in 2008. SU2C provides cutting-edge cancer treatment and funds the researchers who develop these treatments with over $740 million already donated to the cause over the 15-year period.
Cancer takes around 10 million lives globally each year.
The latest statistics from the TCI Hospitals about Cancer locally date back to 2016. At the time four new cancer patients were being diagnosed locally on a monthly basis. In the six-year period between 2010 and 2016, there were 306 cancer patients.
There were 35 different forms of cancer recorded in the country with Breast (64) and Prostate (51) Cancers listed as the most common.
At least 102 residents passed away from cancer or other illnesses during the period.
“The age bracket with the highest number of cancer diagnoses recorded at the hospital is 60 to 69-year-olds, followed by 50 to 59-year-olds. Of these persons who fall within the 60 to 69-year-old age bracket, 30% have Prostate Cancer and 25 percent Breast Cancer. Of the 50 to 59-year-old group, 51 percent of the total number are Breast Cancer diagnoses,” the Hospital explained at the time.
This year’s SU2C event will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 8 pm.
TCI residents can watch on NBC, Peacock, ABC, and other major networks.
