#Jamaica, August 11, 2023 – Jamaica celebrated 61 years of Independence on Sunday August 6th, 2023 and marking the special occasion was the annual Grand Gala held at the National Stadium where scores of Jamaicans came out to celebrate.

The energy, vibe and patriotism Jamaicans are known for shone bright as they celebrated the country’s freedom from colonial rule Sunday evening under the theme, “Jamaica Proud and Strong.”

It was a festive celebration, nothing short of extraordinary as it was filled with entertainment from several performances such as  dancing including the traditional MayPole,  and singing from people like Kukudoo, gospel singer, Tessanne Chin, local artist and winner of the Voice; Michelle Montano, Trinidadian singer;  Slashe, winner of the Jamaica Festival Song competition 2023, Shuga, 2nd place winner; Exco Levy, 3rd place winner and others. Also, there was a spoken piece from Mutabaruka, famous Jamaican poet.

Additionally, a parade of Uniformed Forces  took over the field including, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and others.

Towards the end of the Gala, a striking drone show was put on forming various displays associated with Jamaica such as the famous statue at Emancipation Park called “Redemption Song,” depicting a black man and woman looking to the sky.

However, the highlight of the drone show was the display of the Royal Crown and the word republic spelled out which came soon after, hinting at Jamaica plan to relinquish its Colonial ties and become a Republic.
