July 17, 2023 – Saharan dust is once again passing over the Caribbean affecting some countries and as expected, the phenomenon will likely result in health problems for vulnerable people.

In its latest Air Quality update, the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services reported that from Wednesday June 28th to Monday July 3rd, the country’s air quality dropped to moderate levels due to the dust.

Also, in Trinidad, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Office on Wednesday, an increase in Saharan dust from mild concentrations to moderate were charted from June 29th through that weekend.

Similarly, in Montserrat there was moderate concentrations of Saharan dust across the country according to the Montserrat Disaster Management  Coordination Agency (DMCA); it was also an end of June event.

Health issues are expected to be more prevalent due to the dust, especially for vulnerable people such as asthmatics, and could potentially cause them limited health impacts.

In response, DMCA urged residents  who are unusually sensitive to dust particles to be vigilant.

Additionally, it said residents with respiratory issues such as asthma should keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

The DMCA further advised residents to take action to reduce the amount of dust entering their system as best as possible by using masks and protective eyewear.
