#TurksandCaicos, July 7, 2023 – Residents of the Turks and Caicos are being urged to register their properties for garbage collection with new fees attached as the Government makes efforts to revamp waste disposal in the country.

The call came from the Department of Environmental Health in a press release on Friday June 30th.

“The Department is currently improving its collection services and seeking residents’ and homeowners’ full cooperation in this endeavor.  The continued collection system will involve registering your property with the department and paying a monthly fee based on your property type and frequency of collection,” it said.

The request comes as the Caribbean Development Bank funded Solid Waste Management consultancy continues locally.  That consultancy aims to fix the major solid waste issues affecting the Turks and Caicos, inconsistent collection, improper mass disposal, dangerous fires, and more.

Both residents and the Government have found themselves afoul of proper waste disposal practices, with poor household garbage practices from the former and reported mismanagement causing pile ups and fires at the dump from the latter.

All residents are now asked to visit the Environmental Health Department Offices to complete the registration forms to get their properties listed for collection.

For any questions and for further information residents are asked to contact the department at 338-2143/44.
