#TurksandCaicos, July 17, 2023 – One TCI store manager is putting residents and businesses people on alert after receiving a phony $5 dollar bill from a customer.

Gus Karagianis, Sam’s Club representative, reached out to Magnetic Media Tuesday afternoon with a photo of the fake cash and a warning for others.

“I just want the public and store owners to be aware,” he told our news team. The five dollar bill was handed to the cashier by a customer but in the rush of dealing with others waiting to check out the bill escaped her notice.

“You’re in a grocery store and you’re rushing and there’s one customer after another, you really don’t take the time to check. You might check the $20s $50s and $100 dollar bills but you’re not gonna check a $5 bill.”

Karagianis maintained that she was not at fault in any way and said once the money went to the office, which is less hectic, the difference in the fake bill was obvious.

He now wants TCI residents and businesses to keep an eye out for any potential fraudsters handing out illegitimate notes.

“I thought I’d report it so all the other store owners and even people when they receive money from stores for them to be aware of it.”
