#TurksandCaicos, July 17, 2023 – Magnetic Media court report for Wednesday July 12th, 2023 included the highly experience and well trained Deputy DPP, Angela Brooks who was pit against a legally inexperienced, accused man at his Plea and Directions Hearing (PDH), also on July 12.
CEDRIC SIMMS appeared via video link from His Majesty Prison, where he is currently on remand. Standing before Lady Justice Tanya Lobban Jackson, Simms expressed his desire to represent himself in the proceedings. The judge strongly advised against this course of action, highlighting the gravity of the charges, particularly the allegations of setting fire to a dwelling with people inside.
This offense carries a long term of imprisonment as Simms allegedly endangered lives.
Lady Justice Tanya Loban Jackson told Simms to wait for the court registrar to assign a legal aid lawyer to his case. She reminded him that two lawyers had already been appointed, but he had dismissed both of them, leading to their withdrawal.
The judge assured Simms that she would personally speak to the registrar within the day, aiming to secure a third lawyer who could be assigned to his case by or before the July 20th, 2023.
Simms expressed his eagerness to expedite the process and obtain an early trial date. However, the judge stressed that, although she understood his concerns, it was crucial for him to have legal representation before he enters his pleas on Thursday coming.
She reassured Cedric Simms that the new assigned attorney would reach out to him to discuss the case prior to their next court appearance.
Emphasizing the significance of proper legal procedures towards the accused, and ensuring Simms receives adequate representation, the learned judge undertook to make sure he is given a fair and just trial or legal process. Simms finally appeared satisfied and his tone towards her Ladyship was more relaxed by the end of the exchange with the Hon Judge.
Simms was remanded to prison until the next court date when defence counsel should be already assigned and a plea can be entered to the charges.
