#TurksandCaicos, June 19, 2023 – Residents in the Turks and Caicos are dealing with huge energy costs, and it will take partnership and careful maneuvering to correct it, according to Premier Washington Misick.
“There is a problem. The cost of energy in the Turks and Caicos is extremely high and we have to work together in partnership. We cannot allow the fragmentation of the grid or power generation to the extent that the cost to the normal household becomes even more expensive than it is now,” he said.
The Premier was Speaking at the TCI Energy Forum staged June 2 at the Ritz Carlton Resort; he was part of a panel of experts.
“The ultimate goal must be to drive down the cost for everybody whether you’re a farmer or just an ordinary household.’
In order to accomplish this, the Premier indicated that adaptive leadership must be activated giving residents a say in the solutions to the problem.
“A conference like this for a day is not going to solve the problem. I think we need to be having ongoing collaboration across the society.”
Despite this less than immediate remedy to the unpredictable cost of electricity, Misick maintained the Government was committed to collaboration to improve the energy sector.
“That partnership is between the TCI and Fortis and we want to cultivate that and be good partners but also we hope that that partnership trickles down.”
For the Government’s part Misick emphasized the creation of a regulatory authority as a necessary step.
“The regulatory legislation has to be advanced fairly quickly so that there is protection for everyone – and that ultimately should be to drive the cost of energy down.”
