#TurksandCaicos, June 29, 2023 – The Minister of Immigration and Border Services, Hon. Arlington Alexander Musgrove, joined the United Kingdom’s delegation to attend the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland from June 5th to June 16th, 2023.

During the three-day visit from June 6th to June 9th, Hon. Musgrove observed sessions on the Recurrent Discussion on Labour Protection, the Application of Standards, and Standards Setting for Apprenticeships and further had the opportunity to meet with the Lead on International Labour Organization (ILO) Strategy and UK Relationship, Mr. Dominic Murray.

The conference, which is held annually, is a tripartite discussion among representatives of governments, employers and employees from participating nations and is aimed at discussing and finding solutions to pressing issues in the labour markets around the world. Often these discussions lead to conclusions recommending measures for governments to take to remedy problems or recommendations for the technical assistance of the ILO to intervene and support the affected nations.

Commenting on the event the Minister noted, ‘The United Nations is known for its multi-agency approach to highlighting critical issues that are common, and often time not so common, to nations all around the world, and its International Labour Organization or ILO is no different.

“During my time at the conference, I got to observe and hear pertinent discussions on some of the very matters that are before us here in the Turks and Caicos Islands like the ideal wage and benefits for apprentices, inclusive labour protection and leaving no one behind. These are some of the very issues that are before our government, which we are seeking to find solutions for, likewise.

“I found the conference very informative, and the information gathered will be further reviewed by my team to see how some of the recommendations can benefit us here in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

Some of the nations in attendance were the United Kingdom, the United States, Jamaica and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

The Minister was also joined by the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry, Ms. Althea Been.
