#TurksandCaicos, May 5, 2023 – As the country celebrates mental health month, the need for further facilities to host mental health patients who require recurring care is being highlighted. Governors Appointed Member Willin Belliard, on April 26, brought the issue to the attention of the House of Assembly.

“We find ourselves in a situation where the only place where we can take these persons is to HM Prison and that is not the place where the defense, the prosecutor, or the court believes is right,” he said.

Billiard revealed the issue had been brought to his attention following a recent court case and made a call for a facility with the appropriate security where those who ‘may or may not be violent’ could be treated rather than putting non-offenders on the prison grounds.

“I believe these things can be fixed,” he maintained.

The Government opened its first mental health facility in December 2022.
