#TheBahamas, May 2, 2023 – Ray Minus Junior, former Bahamas and British Commonwealth bantamweight and lightweight boxing champion passed away at 58 on Thursday, April 27th. 2023.

He died just under a month after the all-female boxing match in his honour on March 31st.

There haven’t been any reports on the exact cause of his death as yet, but due to having Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS, it was likely the reason for his passing.

ALS is a type of motor neuron disease which affects the nerve cells that control involuntary muscles like walking, talking and swallowing. It results in the gradual deterioration and death of these nerve cells (motor neurons).

According to the Bahamas Press, he was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago due to having breathing problems.  It was a sad turn of events, as Minus Jr. during a recent series on his life and legacy with ZNS, had said he wanted to return to training.

Mr. Minus certainly made his mark, earning the admiration and respect he was shown during his life. He was a:

  • Six-time British Commonwealth Champion, Commonwealth Boxer 1989
  • Two-time WBC Continental of America’s Champion
  • Three-time Featherweight Champion
  • Four-time Light-Weight Champion
  • Four-time Bahamas Bantamweight Champion
  • and he is the first Bahamian boxer to fight for Three top World Titles, WBC, WBA and WBO.

Minus was also a beloved mentor to young and upcoming boxers in The Bahamas, using his gifts in the ring as a draw to aspiring youth, keeping many out of trouble.
