#TurksandCaicos, May 5, 2023 – The Magnetic Media news team has received reports that the individual involved in Monday’s traffic accident on Leeward Highway has died. The victim has been identified as 34 year old Jason Alexander Robinson.
It is the first road fatality of the year. Concerns were raised about reaction time and emergency access to the victim, but domestic firemen on the scene told us they got to the injured man quickly without incident, and it was the scope of the accident that caused the extended detour, guided by TCI Police.
The accident scene spanned four lanes; two east-bound and two west-bound – just after the Suzie Turn round about and in front of the Flow TCI headquarters. There were said to be four vehicles involved in the collision. While the investigation remains ongoing, experienced onlookers say speed would have been a factor.
Today, a family mourns the loss of a 34-year-old man, who leaves behind a young daughter after passing away early Tuesday morning.
The first responders told us the driver of the silver Toyota sedan was heading east towards the Bight when he hit a vehicle careened through the median, after crossing over the Suzie Turn Roundabout before slamming into a westbound ‘Big Rig’ carrying belongings to Graceway Supermarkets. The huge truck is believed to have been trying to avoid the car; it swung into a ditch.
The victim’s car was also hit by another westbound vehicle.
Firefighters describe the victim as very banged up, when they got to the scene minutes after the accident, he could not get out of the car on his own. A relative reported head injuries and a broken leg.
Videos and photos of the incident show the silver sedan with significant damage to the front and side, traffic was halted for hours as emergency responders attended to the scene. Despite firemen and the ambulance thankfully getting to the injured man in time, it was hours before traffic was flowing freely again.
Our news team began to receive reports of the incident and resulting blockade shortly after 1 p.m. Monday. Those reports and continued complaints regarding the traffic continued for around three hours.
With the sheer size of the accident and a resulting oil spill, the responders said they had to be very cautious, and clearing the debris and removal of multiple damaged vehicles contributed to the extended wait.
In addition, the firefighters say turning points on Leeward Highway are not regular enough, forcing residents, in this instance, to remain stuck in the stagnant traffic.
When police finally began to direct traffic through Turtle Cove, there was another accident resulting in even more chaos and blocking that route.
The debilitating traffic jam has elicited renewed calls for the creation of more access roads across Providenciales, averting gridlocks which could prove life threatening and unsafe.
We have reached out to the police for more information regarding the death. We have also requested an update from Jamell Robinson, the Minister of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development.
