#TurksandCaicos, April 3, 2023 – Residents making minimum wage should by law, see a marked increase on their paychecks as soon as the new $8 National Minimum Wage comes into effect this Saturday, April 1st. The Government made the announcement via press release on March 30th, after a minimum wage review and a one-month period for residents to table their queries and concerns.
The Cabinet officially approved the implementation of the increase on March 29th, and it means all residents currently receiving $6.25 for their services hourly, will take home $8.00 For a 40-hour workweek that is $320, an increase of $70 per week.
This does not apply to workers in the Security, Banking, Financial Services, or Insurance Sectors who will take home $9.00 an hour. For a 40-hour workweek that would amount to $360 weekly, a $110 increase per week from the $250 per week they would receive with a $6.25 per hour wage.
The minimum wage was last raised eight years ago in 2015 under the then PNP administration. The current minimum wage increase has been paired with 3 additional programs:
The National School Nutrition Program
National Day Care Program and
National After School Program
They will come into effect in 6 months with the new school year according to the Washington Misick-led administration.
