#TurksandCaicos, March 14, 2023 – With the Wheeland Dump again ablaze consultants working on the Caribbean Development Bank Solid Waste Study will now have a front row seat to the continuing plight of residents.

Over the weekend Magnetic Media cited complaints from residents about the fumes from the dump which not only smell awful but are causing respiratory issues. Residents complain of asthma attacks and having to shut themselves into their sweltering homes to avoid the stinking plumes of smoke.

The flare up of the years long issue comes just days before a community meeting is to be held with the consultants who are on island to create a workable solution for solid waste.

Kyle Knowles, Wheeland MP and Chair of the Solid Waste Management Taskforce has said it is the lack of such a solution and years of mismanagement that has exacerbated the issue in the Providenciales Landfill which is located in Wheeland; it sits within the most populous community in the country.

The meeting which calls on all residents to be present and explain their issues will be held on March 22nd at 6:30 pm at Healing Waters Ministries on Millennium Highway.

The Government says during the meeting, “attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions, and share their thoughts and ideas about how we can work together to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community.”

We have reached out to Knowles regarding this latest fire at the dump and we are awaiting a response.
