Prince Edward, now Duke of Edinburgh

#UnitedKingdom, March 13, 2023 – It is the crafty culmination of a father’s wish for his youngest son, according to Buckingham Palace, the former Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip wanted for Prince Edward to be bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh, and now Edward’s big brother, King Charles has seen it done.

As a gift giving gesture, His Royal Highness took to appointing his brother the new title on his 59th birthday, also making his wife Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

This follows the death of their father nearly 2 years ago, who was the former Duke of Edinburgh since 1947 upon his marriage to Queen Elizabeth II.

It turns out that the late Queen and her late husband both anticipated that Edward, considering his marriage to Sophie in 1999, would, in due course, become the Duke of Edinburgh. So, it is clear that this bestowal was set in motion decades ago.

While many are excited for the Prince’s recent promotion, to no surprise, there are some people who were not so pumped to hear the news. The anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, in representation of the people of Edinburgh, strongly believes that their views should have been acknowledged prior to the appointment of Prince Edward as Duke.

Also, Graham Smith of the anti-monarchy group spoke against King Charle’s power as Head of State to appoint such position to a member of his own family.

“If we’re going to have such draft titles they should be decided by Parliament or Government-and it should not be possible for the Head of State to award his own family,” he firmly stated.

Now, many may wonder what will come of his former title as Earl of Wessex. Well, his son Viscount Severn, will now take on said title.

As stated by Buckingham Palace, Prince Edward and Sophie are happy and proud to take on and maintain Prince Philips’ legacy, that is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which he created in 1956 to yield opportunities for young people in the United Kingdom as well as overseas.
