#TheBahamas, March 9, 2023Born to Bahamian parents, Aisha Bowe describes herself as a Bahamian-American aerospace engineer who will be the sixth black woman and the first Bahamian in space. Yes, outer space!

Talk about setting high goals, Bowe explains that she grew up in Michigan and was told by her school to be a cosmetologist; instead, with the encouragement of her Bahamian father who worked as a taxi driver, Aisha became a rocket scientist!

Now she will be the first black woman to fly into orbit with the Jeff Bezos-owned space company, Blue Origin.

Excitement exploded across the Caribbean at the announcement last October as the region celebrated along with The Bahamas and Bowe herself. She has a very tight relationship with her cultural homeland as she recently sponsored a Grand Bahama Coding workshop with young people interested in STEM, where the students used her coding kits to build a backup sensor for a car.

While her existence as a Caribbean astronaut is certainly inspiring on its own, the former NASA rocket scientist wants to do more.  Bowe, a millionaire entrepreneur has made it her life’s work to provide minority ethnic groups with the tools to close the educational achievement gap.

With her company STEMBoard, she is truly carrying out the 2023 International Women’s Day theme “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.

STEMBoard provides science camps and more, using coding kits from ‘Lingo,’ another of her inventions, which have over a dozen tech-based exercises for students to test themselves in an effort to get them into stem early.

She reminds students that engineering and tech are not as out of reach as they may seem.

“I was never the best student. I struggled in school. I’m proof that you don’t have to be the best student to be successful in life! Pursue your dreams, follow your passion and never EVER give up on yourself.”
