#TheBahamas, March 6, 2023 – The Citibank Building on University Drive was rechristened Friday morning at a renaming and rededication ceremony and is now called the Edwin “Smiley” Bastian Corporate Center in honour of Edwin Bastian, Philanthropist, political activist and Rotarian.

Prime Minister Philip Davis was in attendance where he made an address in which He gave attention to the late Edwin “Smiley” Bastian whose life and work made a significant impact on society.

In fact, Davis motivated the attendees to seize this year’s 50th independence and to take it as an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the life and work of notable individuals in their own lives.

He said, “In our 50th anniversary of Sovereign Nationhood, let us all in our own unique way commit ourselves celebrating and memorializing the significant contributions and legacies of our brothers sisters and loved ones because the institutional memory this national practice creates will serve to deepen our cultural roots and strengthen our national identity as Bahamians.”

In addition, going forward, doing this is not only significant to the culture and preservation of the Bahamian memory but also to people who deserve recognition, to people who lived a life of contribution and substance. To people who deserved to have their names called and not people whose name is just a name backed only by title. As our Prime Minister highlighted, recognizing and commemorating the impact of our brothers and sisters, of our people.
