#TurksandCaicos, March 23, 2023 – March 21 is being observed as World Down Syndrome Day for 2023 and the global organizers are celebrating with a Lots of Socks campaign. The Special Needs Association of the Providenciales SNAP Center has localized the commemoration, allowing TC residents to take part.
Residents are asked to wear comfy and creative socks to show how similar but unique, individuals with Down Syndrome really are! Lawyers, doctors, teachers, hospitality workers-all are invited to join in and bring awareness to Down Syndrome.
The Snap Center says learning about the condition through this worldwide event raises public awareness, promotes inclusivity, encourages advocacy, and supports the well-being of those living with DS. Plus, there are prizes to be won when you post your pairs on social media with the hashtag #Lotsofsockstci23 or #LOSTCI23 for a chance to win!
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012 on March 12 each year. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.
The SNAP Center is a Learning and care facility which provides both intellectual and life skills opportunities for children and young people between 4 and 21 years old with special needs.
