#TurksandCaicos, March 31, 2023 – The National Meteorological Department is expanding operations following the erection of a new weather station at the Howard Hamilton International Airport.  The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies installed one of its stations there on March 23rd, World Meteorological Day, with the help of corporate partner Digicel.

The Met service is responsible for three-day weather forecasts for the country and partners with the Bahamas Department of Meteorology, which is responsible for tropical cyclone advisories like the ones that kept residents updated during Hurricane Fiona in September last year.

Their work is invaluable, especially during the Atlantic Hurricane season which will start in two months.

“Early Warning Systems are a proven, effective, feasible climate adaptation measure that saves lives. The installation of this weather station adds to their weather observation network and would allow the agencies to monitor the weather throughout the country continuously,” the DDME said in a press release.

Eventually, the plan is to get the TCI capabilities to have a national weather service of its own which will be able to predict hurricanes and their paths accurately, and get life-saving updates to the country in real-time.
