#TurksandCaicos, March 13, 2023 – An out of control car that careened onto the runway from South Dock, Five Cays access road this weekend, ripping through the fencing and prompting an emergency response, is highlighting a major vulnerability of the Providenciales International Airport.

The aircraft taxiway which major commercial aircrafts carrying hundreds of passengers use and the main road for all vehicular traffic heading in and out of Five Cays, are located next to each other. But the only protective barrier is a chain link fence which may keep out animals but is not a true inhibitor to cars crashing onto the taxiway.

The Saturday morning incident showed the car balanced on its side, wheels in the air and the underside of the motor vehicle exposed while airport firefighters doused the flaming, smoking vehicle with water.

Passers-by filmed the scene; all unfolding in plain sight through the broken fence of the motoring public.

Despite this, that tiny cars can tear through the chain link so easily is a concerning issue, raising alarm about the risk to flight traffic especially as the roadway is frequented by huge trailers moving goods and supplies from the South Dock port.

We have reached out to the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority which told us that the incident was under investigation by the police and thankfully had not caused any interruption to the flight schedule.
