#TurksandCaicos, February 3, 2023 – The Turks and Caicos Islands joins in with countries around the world in recognition of World Cancer Day on 4th February 2023. This year’s theme: ‘’Uniting our voice and taking action” is a fitting theme as we are not only responsible for educating ourselves on the importance of living healthier lifestyles but, taking action. “Walk the talk” is a must as we focus not only on ourselves but also our families to form healthier habits and lifestyles that limit the likelihood of the development of non-communicable diseases which can increase the risk of cancers.

The most recent global data showed an estimated 18.9 million cases of cancers globally in 2020. Of those reported, 9.3 million cases were in men and 8.8 million cases in women. Breast and lung cancers were the most prevalent, contributing 12.5% and 2.2% respectively of the total number of newly diagnosed cases for the same period. In the Caribbean, cancer is recorded as the second leading cause of death, accounting for a fifth of all mortalities.

The Minister of Health, the Hon. Shaun Malcolm, in his statement for World Cancer Day stated that “The theme begs us to ACT, we must innovate and improve the care and the lives of patients, but at the same time do all that we can to prevent cancer.”

As a part of our efforts to strengthen public awareness, the Health Promotion and Advocacy Unit has partnered with the Ministry of Education and Private schools to bring greater awareness to schools by seeking their participation in a “Crazy Color Day” where a number of different colors are to be worn to draw attention to the many different types of cancers. The Unit has also organized walks throughout the country with participants wearing the national island colors to represent the different types of cancers in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Director of Health Promotion and Advocacy Unit stated “Early detection is key to combating cancers in the TCI, coupled with regular physical activity and healthy eating practices. Persons need to be more vigilant concerning their health and adopt healthier behaviours, let us unite in the fight”.

Remember to get your COVID-19 booster vaccine.
