#TheBahamas, February 15, 2023 – The TCI has support from the Bahamian Government in its new initiative to create more integration between the two countries evidenced by Bahamian Prime Minister Phillip ‘Brave’ Davis’ attendance at the recent TCI-Bahamian Diaspora conference.

When Magnetic Media managed to catch up with him at the glittering event, held at Crypto Isles on East Bay Street he described the gathering as for the best of both countries.

“Well, it is always good for people to gather together and see each other— it helps to melt the tension that exists in us.” He indicated that this should not be a one-off meeting. “Gatherings like this should continue, to build up the common good amongst us.”

Davis, who is also the current Chairman of CARICOM, is welcoming scores of dignitaries to Nassau, Bahamas for the 44th Regular Meeting of the Caribbean Community; it is a heads of Government session which will also feature as special guest, Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister and via video link, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine.

During his speech to the  gathered members of the Diaspora, all invited guests of the Office of the Premier and TCI Ministry of Immigration and Border Services he said:

“We are one, and the Turks and Caicos is no doubt a part of the archipelago chain of The Bahamas. And so we are not to make any differentiation between us — we ought not to get caught up in this whole thing of who are Turks and who are Bahamians, because we all are one.”

Expressing that he was joyful to be among friends, he joked that we might have more people from Turks and Caicos Islander descent in The Bahamas than there are in the TCI

“The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos have a long indelible, history of friendship and cooperation, and I want us to remember what happens in one country doesn’t stay in one country— our shared contribution goes beyond our history and culture, because the diaspora plays a critical role in promoting who we are, and promoting the understanding between our two nations.”

Speaking in his position as chairman of CARICOM, Davis said he certainly hoped that the Turks and Caicos would apply for full membership of the Community at “this meeting,” adding that the regional organization would “gladly accept them.”

Turks and Caicos is currently an Associate Member of CARICOM.
