#StLucia, February 20, 2023 – St Lucia’s Ministry of Health and Wellness said the global reports of COVID-19 cases are being underrated as 178 new infections and 1 death was recorded on the island within 30 days ending on February 6.  During the same period, the number of confirmed cases in the region remained relatively low.

Having noticed an increase in respiratory infections among residents, St Lucia’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sharon Belmar-George said 12 sub-variants of Omicron are in circulation and have been sequenced by the Ministry.

“In addition to COVID-19 there are other respiratory viruses in circulation which may possess a similar clinical presentation to COVID-19,” she added.

George noted that the spike was expected with the relaxing of COVID-19 measures last year.  She said influenza cases were also reduced by these measures which explain the current increase.
