#Jamaica, December 20, 2022 – Jamaica’s eight-time Olympic gold medallist and the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, has been named the honorary of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award for 2022.

The thirty-six-year-old was crowned Olympic champion for the 100m and 200m at three successive Games – Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. He is also the only athlete to win the 100m and 200m at three consecutive Olympics.

Bolt retired from track and field in August 2017 after the World Championships in London as a 19-time global champion.

In an interview with BBC Sport, the sprint champion attributed his successful sporting career to hard work.

“I’m living proof that if you work hard, you can get anything you want,” he said.

“One thing my dad taught me was if you want something, work hard for it. He showed me by working hard to provide for me, my mum and my sister, so when he told me, I believed it. Just be focused and work towards it.”

Bolt will join a talented group of past winners of the lifetime achievement award. These include last year’s recipient Olympic gold medalist gymnast Simone Biles, Billie Jean King, Pele, Bobby Charlton, Tanni Grey-Thompson, David Beckham, Jessica Ennis-Hill, and Chris Hoy.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year event will be held on Wednesday, December 21, at Salford in England.
