#UnitedKingdom, December 14, 2022 – The UK community of Solihull is in mourning after three young boys were killed and one seriously injured on Sunday when they fell into the semi-frozen lake they were playing on.

According to West Midlands Police the boys aged eight, 10 and 11 were part of a group of children playing in a popular park through which the lake passes.  The UK has been experiencing an early winter cold snap which froze the surface of the water which some of the children then ventured out on.

The ice collapsed and four of them fell in.  It is now being reported that the 10-year-old died trying to save the other children.

Police and Firefighters were alerted after 2 pm and officers and residents are said to have rushed onto the lake soon after in the near freezing conditions.  While waiting for the special gear needed to properly carry out the rescue, one of the officers had to be hospitalized with mild hypothermia after trying to punch through the ice to in an effort to get to the boys Superintendent Richard Harris told the BBC.

The boys were already in cardiac arrest when they were finally rescued and were rushed to hospital; hours later  police revealed that only one, the youngest at six years old, survived the ordeal.

The Fire Service is now reminding that even if lakes look solid on the surface, they may not be frozen through with  rushing currents just underneath. Residents who fall into them can be pulled along these currents away from the point of entry making rescue difficult or impossible.
