#Dominica, December 9, 2022 – Following Dominica’s general election on Tuesday, Roosevelt Skerrit has been reelected as Prime Minister for the sixth consecutive term.  The Dominica Labour Party won 19 of the 21 House of Assembly seats.

The remaining two seats were won by independent candidates, Anthony Charles and Jesma Paul for the Marigot and Salisbury Constituencies.

Skerrit expressed congratulations to the candidates and plans to reach out to UWP leader, Dr. Thompson Fontaine.  The PM also intends to meet with Charles and Paul in order to discuss their visions for the constituency.

The largest opposition party, United Workers Party and the Dominica Freedom Party had boycotted the election after requesting electoral reform.  They said the current electoral process was more favourable for the DLP.

With regards to the requested electoral reform, Skerrit said they will begin consultations next month.  The legislation to establish identification cards will be passed by Easter 2023.

Skerrit stated that he has asked the Commonwealth of Nations, Caribbean Community and Organisation of American States to review the electoral reforms and ensure international standards are met.
