Portia Simpson Miller Day launched by PNP to honour former Jamaican Prime Minister

#Jamaica, December 14, 2022 – In honour of Jamaica’s former prime minister, Portia Simpson Miller, the People’s National Party (PNP) has declared December 12 as Portia Simpson Miller Day.  Simpson Miller, who was Jamaica’s first and only female prime minister, celebrated her 77th birthday on the 12th.

The executive body of the PNP announced that her birthday will be celebrated yearly. A statuette will also be erected to recognize Simpson Miller’s valuable contribution to the country.

Simpson Miller served as Jamaica’s prime minister twice in her 43 years of representative politics. During her career, she also served as Minister of Labour, Social Security and Sport, Minister of Defence, Development, Information and Sport, Minister of Local Government and Minister of Tourism and Sports.

The Gleaner and Observer declared her Person of the Year in 2011, and in 2012 she was also listed as one of the 100 most influential people by Time.

Portia Simpson Miller retired in June 2017.
