#USA, December 23, 2022 – Lorna Mahlock who was appointed to Major General by Joe Biden on December 6 will be recognized as the first black woman to serve in this capacity in the US Marine Corps. The Jamaican national was also the first black woman to be appointed as brigadier General in 2018.
Mahlock moved to New York in 1985 and was later commissioned in the force in 1991. Mahlock said women in the Marine Corps are now more appreciated, having served for over 30 years herself.
During her years of service, Mahlock has held several positions including Air Traffic Control Officer and a Tactics Instructor. She also served in the war in Iraq.
