#TurksandCaicos, November 2, 2022 – After several reports of illegal activity on the TCI’s roads, the Department of Motor Vehicles has issued a statement reminding residents of their responsibilities while driving and importing vehicles to the islands.

Issued on Friday October 28, the statement reminds residents it is illegal to import trailers or vehicles into the TCI without sending them straight from the point of importation directly to a vehicle inspector or a warehouse for examination.

In addition, all license stickers must be affixed to and exhibited on the motor vehicle for which it is issued in the manner and position prescribed. The DMV says the same goes for license plates.

All drivers must have motor vehicle insurance barring which their car will be impounded.

Lastly, all persons operating a motor vehicle in the Islands must be in possession of a Turks and Caicos Islands driver’s license to operate the specific class of vehicle being driven.

Visitors to the islands can drive on a license issued by a Commonwealth country or the United States of America for 30 days.

The DMV explained that these rules had been broken in the last couple of days and encouraged residents and visitors to desist immediately

“Over the past several days, it has been brought to the Department’s attention that a number of persons are not adhering to the requirements while operating a vehicle.  Please note that the provisions of the Ordinances will be strictly enforced by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force as well as the Department of Motor Vehicles.”
