#TurksandCaicos, November 21, 2022 – After repeated calls for mobile police stations to be procured in The Turks and Caicos the Government has awarded a contract for one to be custom-built.  The approval, for an undisclosed amount of money, is yet further support being given to the Royal TCI Police, which has over the years seen its budget augmented by millions of dollars, in an effort to curb crime.

The announcement was made by the Governor’s office via recent cabinet minutes.  Cabinet approved the contract on November 16th.

The Turks and Caicos is experiencing one of its bloodiest years to date in 2022 with four men shot over the weekend and one of those men dying in hospital after being sprayed with bullets, this past Saturday, in broad daylight.

These targeted, reckless shootings have heightened calls for alternate crime fighting measures within the most affected communities.  Mobile police stations were named as a potentially powerful tool by the Opposition PDM in improving police visibility.

Police and other officials have agreed.

The mobile unit was recommended as a swift and smart alternative following the sudden closure of the police stations in Five Cays and Wheeland.

With the tender process completed and a successful contractor now awarded the contract to build the station, construction is expected to begin soon.

The police and government have been quiet about the contract though.  There is no announcement as yet on the timeline or what company has been approved for the project.

It is presumed the mobile station is for the island of Providenciales, which is facing local and international pressures due to the surge in gun violence; over 30 murders have been committed on Provo, for a tragically record year for killer crime.
