November 17, 2022 – The number of people with diabetes in the Caribbean and America has tripled over the past 30 years. The Pan American Health Organization reports that in the Americas, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death.

This increase is largely due to poor diet trends, no physical activity, and obesity observed across the region.

According to the director of the Department of Non-communicable Diseases and Mental Health for PAHO, Dr. Anselm Hennis, countries need to now give priority to promoting healthy lifestyles. He said early diagnosis and good management of Diabetes are also crucial.

With the number of young people diagnosed with diabetes rapidly increasing across the region, health authorities sought to raise awareness and warned young people of the risks. November 14,  2022, was recognized as World Diabetes Day.
