CURRENT SITUATION IN HAITI AND TCI RESPONSE MEASURES TO MITIGATE AN INFLUX OF IRREGULAR MIGRANTS

Arlington Musgrove, Minister of Immigration and Border Services, with responsibility for the Immigration Department, would like to remind the General Public that his Ministry continues to monitor closely the current economic and political environment in Haiti which is believed to be the driver of economic hardship, insecurity and irregular migration.

As such, the following are mitigation measure currently in place to address an influx of irregular migrants into the islands;

  • Review of detention capability and capacity in all islands
  • Increase presence of both aerial and sea assets in collaboration with international partners to further secure the borders.
  • The imminent commencement of the Shipriders initiative with the Bahamas
  • Stiffer penalties for those who are caught breaking the Immigration Laws
  • Increase enforcement activities within the communities aimed at removing those who reside illegally within the islands

Hon. Musgrove encourages all persons to report any unusual movement or information received of illegal persons immediately to 911.Members of the community are encouraged to continue to report what they know about illegal migration activity and can do so using Crime stoppers, which can be done anonymously, on 1-800-8477.  Persons can also contact the Immigration Intelligence Unit directly on 649-338-4415 or by email at tciintel@gov.tc.
